SDC standard
The standard “IEEE 11073-20702 – Health informatics – Point-of-care medical device communication Part 20702: Medical Devices Communication Profile for Web Services” (short “Medical DPWS” or “MDPWS”) ensures basic interoperability between medical devices. MDPWS enable the secure exchange of data in distributed systems and the dynamic finding of networking partners. The standard is derived from the OASIS standard Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS). MDPWS defines extensions and restrictions to meet the security requirements of networked medical devices.

The standard “IEEE 11073-10207 – IEEE Health informatics – Point-of-care medical device communication Part 10207: Domain Information and Service Model for Service-Oriented Point-of-Care Medical Device Communication” was developed on the basis of the “classic” IEEE 11073-10201 Domain Information Model (DIM). The non-normative name of the standard is Basic Integrated Clinical Environment Protocol Specification (BICEPS). The domain information and service model is designed to meet the requirements of multipoint-to-multipoint communication.
The domain information model is divided into two parts to describe the medical device in the network: The device description represents the capabilities of the device. For example, the existing measured values, parameters, alarms, etc. are described, as are the options for remote control of certain device functionalities. The second part references the description and reflects the current device status, e.g. current values. IEEE 11073-10207 thus ensures structural interoperability.

The standard “IEEE 11073-20701-2018 – Health informatics – Point-of-care medical device communication – Part 20701: Service-Oriented Medical Device Exchange Architecture and Protocol Binding” describes the comprehensive service-oriented medical device architecture. It also describes the interaction (binding) between IEEE 11073-20702 and IEEE 11073-10207, as well as the use of other standards such as Network Time Protocol (NTP) for time synchronization or Differentiated Services (DiffServ) for Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Using terminology standards (such as IEEE 11073-10101), the IEEE 11073 SDC family of standards enables semantic interoperability.
